Cumbria was formed in 1974 from the old counties of Cumberland, Westmorland, and small parts of North Lancashire and West Yorkshire. Carlisle is the only city in the county. The World Heritage Site Hadrian's Wall runs through part of the city.
The most famous part of Cumbria is the Lake District National Park - England's largest National Park that includes England 's highest mountain, Scafell Pike and deepest lake, Wastwater.
Ulverston in south Cumbria is the start of the Cumbria Way, a long distance walk of 112 km/70 miles all the way up to Carlisle. It is also the birthplace of Stan Laurel and the home of the Laurel & Hardy Museum .
Whitehaven, on the coast, has the Rum Story which won the Small Visitor Attraction of the Year 2007 from Cumbria Tourism.
